Of special interest to me is the link on the KQED page regarding archaeological heritage in Iraq. Following a (slightly too) dramatic animated sequence, you can look at the Archaeological Institute of America's recent statement on protecting archaeogical heritage in Iraq. While a bunch of inscribed tablets may seem unimportant compared to the human lives at risk, we still have to think about the consequences for heritage after this is all over. Removal of cultural objects from North and South America, the Near East, and other parts of the world for display in European (and later American) museums was a large part of the Western colonial project of the past few centuries - and we're still trying to redeem ourselves for the 'rape and pillage' attitude of early collectors.
